I have been itching to decorate a cake….
So when Laura’s mum asked me to bake & decorate her little girl’s 2nd Birthday cake I was both excited & shocked! Gosh! It felt like a few months since I had done Laura’s 1st Birthday cake.
Laura is an October baby & her mum loves Autumn colours. Last year we decided on a chocolate cake covered with light green fondant, a sweet little teddy bear as a topper, with a few cute lady birds & delicate yellow flowers.

This year’s cake theme is also very Autumnal. Laura is obsessed with hedgehogs & butterflies, so her mum asked me to create a cake using Autumn coloured leaves, butterflies, mushrooms & small flowers. I used Pinterest for inspiration, & once I had a clear idea of what I wanted the cake to look like, I started making the toppers, leaves & flowers.
I baked two 6 inches (3″ depth) chocolate cakes which I covered in a very thin layer of vanilla buttercream. I used a textured rolling pin to create the effect on the green fondant, and a sugarpaste extruder for the grass. It’s so much fun when I have the right tools to work with: makes the cake decorating so stress-free!
The cake assembling took only a few hours. I did the decorations, all edible, a few days before to have enough time to dry completely.
What do you think?
Miss Hedgehog is my favorite. She is so cute & suprisingly easy to make. I used the step by step tutorial from TeaCakeAndCreateBlog. She’s such a cutie!

I was gifted a set of letter stamps which I used to make the Happy Birthday Banner
The mushroom is made with edible fondant
The Autumn colour used for the leaves is a mixture of yellow & red fondant
I used a butterfly plunger cutter: Set of 3 – You can buy it from here!
Following is an abundance of photos…be warned!
Best thank you ever: a photo of Laura’s face when she saw the birthday cake!
Happy 2nd Birthday sweet Laura!
